How to Switch Medicare Advantage Plans During AEP

If your current Medicare Advantage plan isn't working the way it used to — a doctor left the network, a medication got more expensive, or you just want to see what else is out there — the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) is your window to make a change.

Step 1: Get clear on why you're considering a switch

Before comparing anything, write down what's actually bothering you about your current plan. Is it the premium? A specific doctor no longer in-network? A medication that jumped in price? Getting specific here makes the rest of the process much faster.

Step 2: Check your doctors and pharmacy first

Provider networks are the single biggest source of frustration after a switch. Before anything else, confirm which plans (if any) keep your current doctors, specialists, and pharmacy in-network. A plan can look great on paper and still be the wrong fit if your cardiologist isn't covered.

Step 3: Compare drug coverage, not just the premium

Every plan has its own drug formulary and its own tiers for what you pay. A plan with a lower monthly premium can still cost more overall if your specific medications sit on a higher-cost tier. It's worth checking your actual prescription list against each plan you're considering.

Step 4: Look at the extra benefits

Many Medicare Advantage plans include benefits beyond Original Medicare — things like dental, vision, hearing, or fitness programs. These vary a lot plan to plan, so it's worth understanding what's actually included versus what's just advertised.

A second opinion helps here. Comparing plan documents side by side is tedious and the marketing language from different carriers doesn't always make an apples-to-apples comparison easy. A licensed independent agent can walk through your specific doctors, medications, and budget with you.

Step 5: Make the switch

Once you've picked a plan, enrollment during AEP is straightforward — you can enroll online, by phone, by mail, or with the help of a licensed agent. The new plan takes effect January 1. You're allowed to enroll in a new plan even if you haven't formally "cancelled" the old one — enrolling in a new Medicare Advantage plan automatically ends the previous one.

What if you change your mind after AEP?

If you're already in a Medicare Advantage plan and enrolled during AEP, there's a second window — the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, January 1 through March 31 — that allows one additional plan switch if needed.
